Baseball: Beavers blank Olivet 5-0

The Bluffton University baseball team kept host Olivet off the scoreboard in a 5-0 victory over the Comets on a beautiful Tuesday, April 9, 2019. Bluffton moved past the .500 mark for the first time since Florida, improving to 13-12 on the season.

Cam Clark (Cairo/Bath) was in complete control from the start, allowing just three paltry hits in a seven-inning shutdown effort. Fellow junior Tommy Siemer (Liberty Township/Lakota East) capped it off with two inings of scoreless relief as the Beavers combined for their first shutout of the season. Clark fanned five and walked two while improving to 2-2 on the year.

Bluffton did all the damage it needed in a four-run third that was served up thanks to a pair of Olivet errors. Back-to-back doubles by Colin Gregory (Fremont/Clyde) and Parker Reynolds (Avon) made it 3-0 before Lenny Winiarski (Cincinnati/LaSalle) singled home Reynolds for the 4-0 lead.

Winiarski was back in the action when he doubled to lead off the ninth. Pinch runner Elisha Tressler (Bryan) moved to third on an Alex Lemanski (Miamisburg) sacrifice bunt and Adam Duncan (Northwood/Lake) pushed the lead to 5-0 with his RBI single to right field.

Making the most of his return to the middle of the lineup, Winiarski went 3-of-4 with an RBI. Gregory drove in two and Reynolds chipped in with a pair of safeties. Clark and Siemer dominated the Comets, limiting Olivet to four hits and no runs with six strikeouts.

Bluffton is back at Memorial Field on Saturday, April 13, when the Beavers welcome Mount St. Joseph for a Heartland Conference doubleheader. The first game is slated for 1 p.m.
