A modern adaptation of a Greek myth

Themes of beauty, truth and the nature of human existence are explored during Bluffton University’s fall play “Helen.” The modern adaptation of the famous Greek myth about Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world, tackles issues that are as common today as they were in the Iron Age.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1-3 and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 in Bluffton University’s Ramseyer Auditorium.

Becca Starn ’18 will present “From Kitchen to Corporate: My Internship at One of the Country’s Favorite Restaurants” during an 11 a.m. Forum on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the Reading Room of Musselman Library. 

Starn, a native of Findlay, Ohio, will graduate in December 2018 from Bluffton University as a food and nutrition and psychology double major. During the presentation she will share about experiences during her eight-week internship in Tennessee at Cracker Barrel’s corporate headquarters.

Allows teachers to earn reading endorsement classes

Teachers seeking to advance their careers can fast-track their plans by enrolling in Bluffton University’s summer reading endorsement program.

Licensed teachers, who took a phonics class during their undergraduate studies, can add the reading endorsement to their teaching license by taking as few as four classes from Bluffton University during the summer of 2019.

The four mandatory classes will be offered primarily during the months of June and July. The first set of online classes will take place from June 10-July 5 and the second set from July 8-Aug. 2.

Laura Kissel on making the film "Cotton Road"

Laura Kissel, professor of media arts in the school of visual arts and design at the University of South Carolina, will speak during Bluffton University’s Forum at 11 a.m. on Nov. 6 in Yoder Recital Hall. The title of her presentation is “Making the Film ‘Cotton Road.’”

The documentary film director/producer will discuss why and how she made the award winning film “Cotton Road,” which will be screened at 7 p.m. on the same day in Yoder Recital Hall.

Dr. Perry Bush, professor of history, will present the Colloquium, “Christian Nonviolence and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee,” at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

During the presentation, Dr. Bush will share research on the history of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), and in particular, how it integrated Christian nonviolence in its organizing efforts.
