Unusual Armyworm Outbreak

Northwest Ohio extension offices are noting "an unusual number of reports about fall armyworm outbreaks particularly in forage including alfalfa and sorghum sudangrass, and in turf. Certain hard-hit fields have been all but stripped bare." 

The infestation can affect crops and lawns. Fall armyworm does not overwinter in Ohio.

Mum's the word at Farmers Market

Fall flowers brighten the September 4 Bluffton Farmers Market, which is open 8:30 a.m. to noon at 102 S. Main St. The market is a program of the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Pirate gridders ground Pilots, stay undefeated

In its first road game of the season, Bluffton raced to a big lead and held off Defiance Ayersville 25-13 in a Friday night, September 3, non-league battle.

The victory upped the Bluffton record to 3-0, while Ayersville dropped to 2-1 after the loss. The Pilots entered the game rated first in the Div. VII, Region 26 rankings.

Bluffton scored the first 25 points of the contest before Ayersville got on the board with a touchdown in each of the final two periods. But it was too little, too late.

Sept 3 soccer victory against Olivet women

The Bluffton University women's soccer team secured their first victory of the season when they welcomed Olivet College to the Sears Athletic Complex on a beautiful Friday, Sept. 3. The Beavers were able to hold off the Comets late in the second half, en route to a 2-1 victory. Bluffton improved to 1-1 on the season, while Olivet fell to 0-1.

Sommer Center Spiketacular begins with loss to Heidelberg

The Bluffton University volleyball team dropped a three-setter in the 2021 Sommer Center Spiketacular on Friday, Sept. 3. The Beavers fell to 1-1 on the season, while Heidelberg stays perfect at 2-0.

The home team came out on fire in the opener, going up 4-0 on the strength of Courtney Weekley's (Butler/Clear Fork) laser-like serving. Heidelberg responded with a litany of kills and service aces, outscoring Bluffton 25-7 the rest of the way for a convincing 25-11 victory. The Student Princes followed that up with 25-19 and 25-23 victories en route to the sweep.

VB rallies past Lady Pirate kickers

The visiting Bluffton girls soccer team led most of the way but ended up losing a 3-2 nailbiter at Van Buren Thursday evening, September 2.

The Lady Pirate kickers dropped to 2-2 after the non-conference defeat. The Lady Black Knights improved to 4-2 with the come-from-behind win.

Bluffton's Reagan Mittendorf netted both Pirate goals. She put the Pirates on the board in the 15th minute on a Riley Eachus assist, and the Pirates carried that 1-0 lead into halftime.
