Students honored for academic excellence at Bluffton University

Bluffton University recognized its top students for their academic achievements at the annual Academic Awards and Honors Forum on April 23.

Four seniors received departmental honors for independent-study projects: 

“Everyday Nutrition and its Effects on the Eyes,” by Brooke Barnes, a biology major from Shelby, Ohio

“Who Am I,” by art major Kelly Bilen of Archbold, Ohio

“Gerda and Kay,” by writing major Abby Bush from Marion, Ohio

“Earphone Epidemic?: Prevalence of Earphone Use and Listening Behaviors Among Students,” by MacKenzie Martin, a speech-language pathology and audiology major from Hartville, Ohio

Six seniors were recognized for completion of the Honors Program.

Bluffton University awards faculty research grants

Academic scholarship by Bluffton University faculty members was recognized at the annual year-end Dean’s Reception. “We know that this important scholarly work enriches your teaching and the university,” said Dr. Alex Sider, interim vice president of academic affairs.

Faculty research is promoted through financial grants and by course release time which relieves faculty of teaching responsibilities to provide time for research or creative endeavors.

Dr. Steve Harnish, professor of mathematics, will develop computational simulations for use in research labs seeking to address the evolving climate crisis. This project will build on his past research to expand career opportunities for Bluffton mathematics and natural sciences students.

President’s Ambassadors named at Bluffton University

Bluffton University has named the students who will serve as President’s Ambassadors during the 2024-25 academic year. Selected students assist in recruiting prospective students, welcoming and greeting campus guests, and engaging alumni and donors.

President’s Ambassadors receive extensive training in networking, professional development, etiquette, conversational skills and interviewing. They also are partnered with a faculty/staff mentor and connect with President Jane Wood on a regular basis. 

First implemented on campus during the 2021-22 academic year, the program won a 2022 Independent College Advancement Associates (ICAA) Program of Excellence Award.

Annual university athletic awards celebrate success

Above) Kelly Armentrout (Lima, Ohio), Bill Hanefeld (Bluffton, Ohio) and Cole Kropka (New London, Ohio) received awards as outstanding athletes and contributors to Bluffton University athletics.

“Success is a Choice” was the message given at the Bluffton University Athletics Award forum on Tuesday, April 16. Awards were also presented to standout senior student-athletes and a dedicated supporter of Bluffton athletics. 

Music to fill lobby and Yoder Recital Hall, April 21 

Bluffton University music groups will come together for a spring concert of fun and familiar tunes on Sunday, April 21, in Yoder Recital Hall.

At 2:00 p.m., pre-concert music will be provided in the lobby. A jazz combo will perform with senior trumpeter Caleb Gaertner, a Music major/graphic design minor from Toledo. Selections include “When I Fall in Love” – made famous by Nat King Cole – and “Song For My Father” by Horace Silver.

The 2:30 concert will feature the University Chorale, Camerata Singers and Concert Band in a varied program of classical music, as well as “just for fun” pieces.

Juarez wins oratorical prize for treatment of elders speech

Feeling valued is even more important for those living in skilled nursing facilities according to Bluffton University junior Jenna Juarez. She advocated for including meaningful daily activities for elders in her winning speech during the C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest at Bluffton.
