November 2010

Bluffton University students will direct a series of one-act plays in Ramseyer Auditorium on Dec. 1 and 2, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night. General admission is $1; all tickets can be purchased at the door.

The plays are completely student-run shows staged by students in Dr. Melissa Friesen's Play Direction class, which is required for all theatre minors. The students had to read through published collections of 10-minute plays, then choose a compelling play with two or three actors that they would enjoy directing.

It's book book fair at the Bluffton Middle School. The Scholastic Book Fair is open Friday, Nov. 19 and Monday, Nov. 22 during school hours. Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

According to Cheryl Morris, there will be posters, computer software, school supplies and, of course, lots of books available.

Icon viewers:

November is National Long Term Care Awareness Month-and the timing couldn't be better. Throughout the holiday season, families join together to share traditional festivities and reminisce of holidays past. This family-focused time presents an ideal opportunity to talk with aging family members about their wishes concerning long term care.

Luke Young on CNN

Bluffton's 15 minutes of fame continues as the "breaking story" of a six-point buck enters Luke's Bar and Grill on Nov. 5 was featured on CNN on Nov. 10.

The deer broke through the front window of Luke's on Friday, Nov. 5. The incident was captured on several security cameras in the bar. The images were quickly added to the internet and suddenly the rest is internet history.

Fortunately only two customers were in the bar when the deer entered.

The CNN clip came after a Toledo television crew visited Luke's earlier this week.

Were you born in Bluffton? Did your family always live on the nature preserve?

Yes, Bluffton Hospital. My first memories are of the house we lived in on Riley Street, down by the entrance to the Buckeye Park. I also remember riding big wheels on the sidewalks with the Agner boys. I'm not exactly sure when we moved to the Preserve, sometime in the early '80s. Anyways, mom and dad are going on 25+ years out there.

Dick Boehr is this month's speaker at the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast. The event is at 7:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 12, in the community room of the town hall.

Boehr has been a member of the chamber and the Bluffton Business Men's Association, which eventually became the chamber. He has been in business in Bluffton for over 50 years. His talk title is: "Why Bluffton?"

Events begin at 7 a.m. as Joy Stemen will provide members with free massages. Jonathan Luginbill, Bluffton University music major, will provide instrumental music during that time.
