At Monday's Bluffton school board meeting

Bluffton school board puts some actions into place for the 2018-19 school year at its Monday meeting.

Among agenda items include:
• Contracts, assignments and resignations – Those include several contracts for supplemental coaching, substitute teacher, substitute educational aides, substitute secretary and substitute cafeteria workers.

• One student teaching assignment – Lauren Roberts of University of Dayton with Elizabeth Smith

Over $8,500 handed out on Aug. 13

The Bluffton American Legion post 382 donated over $8,500 split among 18 area non-profit organizations. The awards ceremony was Aug. 13.

Ohio American Legion Department Commander Robert E. Schmitt attended the ceremony.

Chairmen Fred Arnold and Sam Reineke said that they would like to thank all the sponsors and golfers for their generous donations for the legion's 9th annual charitable golf scramble. Without these folks we would not be able to support the 18 organizations.

Died Aug. 15 after three-year battle with cancer

Stephen Anthony Cervi (Bluffton resident from 1988-2001) died on Aug. 15, 2018, after a three-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Linda of Kelseyville, California, son Lucas Cervi (Kelly) of St. Paul, Minnesota, daughter Sarah Stockton (Jonathan) of Aurora, Colorado, sister, Laura Cervi of Mesa, Arizona, brother Bruce Cervi (Karen) of Studio City, California, and four grandchildren.

The Inn at ONU presents “Fearless ShenANYgans,” at 7:30 p.m., Wedneday, Aug. 29, in its series of summer programs.

The program is an evening of comedy improv in The Inn’s garden courtyard.

Reservations are required and seating is limited. Tickets are $25 and includes an appetizer and dessert buffet, tax, gratuity. Included in the buffet is sweet chili barbecue meatballs, spring rolls, bacon and cheese dip with house-made kettle chips, dessert kabobs and other items.

Ohio Department of Insurance director Jillian Froment is reminding college students and their parents to ensure that adequate insurance protection is in place for the upcoming school year. 

“An insurance review with an agent should be part of getting ready to go back to school,” Froment said. “Both students and parents will have that much more peace of mind knowing they have an up-to-date financial protection plan.”

Nancy (Dunbar) Barker, 82, died on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at 9:29 a.m. at Vancrest of Ada.

She was born Dec. 26, 1935 in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Russell and Hester (Kiler) Dunbar.  On July 27, 1963, she married Harold Duane Barker and he survives in Ada, Ohio.

Surviving are her son: James (Julie) Barker of Bellaire, Texas, and her daughter: Linda (Mike) Meyer of Defiance, Ohio; a sister, Susan (Lowman) McCarley of Walnut Creek, California; three grandchildren Austin and Tyler Meyer and Allie Barker.

Programs and classes in opening session run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 30

Sediment and phosphorus reduction in the Tiderishi Creek watershed

The Great Lakes Commission has awarded the Blanchard River Watershed Partnership (BRWP) a $147,330 Great Lakes Basin Funding grant for sediment and phosphorus reduction in the Tiderishi Creek watershed. The Tiderishi Creek watershed is located in Hancock west of Findlay.

Since most of the land use in the Tiderishi Creek watershed (79.5%) is for cropland

Findlay HS steel drum band, Pantasia, will entertain guests

Findlay High School’s steel drum band, Pantasia, will play at a free concert on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at Mennonite Memorial Home (MMH), 410 W. Elm St., Bluffton.

MMH has hosted the annual Concert on the Lawn since 2005. The Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Service Group will serve ice cream, and ice water will also be available.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and dress for the weather.
