Visiting Bluffton lost 5-0 at Celina in the girls tennis season opener Monday evening.

Lady Pirate Sophomore Brooke Camper dropped a tough three-setter at first singles in a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker 4-6, 7-6, 10-3.

Pirate sophomore Caitlyn Couch also lost a close three-set battle at second singles by an 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 count.

Sophomore Alyssa Hoffman succumbed in a straight-sets match at third singles.

Pirate seniors Ellie Nickel and Libby Frazier lost at first doubles in two sets.

Committee meeting and council meetings set

The host Bluffton golf team teed off the 2021 season by finishing fourth at the eight-team Pirate Invitational Friday.

Ottoville captured the team crown at the Bluffton Golf Course with a score of 319, 18 strokes ahead of second-place Upper Sandusky (337).

Columbus Grove took third (347), while Bluffton totaled 358 atrokes. Pandora-Gilboa finished fifth with a score of 367.

The Bluffton Relay for Life will be held on August 20 at Bluffton Presbyterian Church lawn from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The schedule of events includes a survivor meal, silent auction, pie auction, games for kids, and more.

Wilda Stauffer Schrag was born March 4, 1922 in Milford, NB, to Henry and Sophie (Zimmerman) Stauffer. She died on Monday August 2,2021 at the Ebied Hospice Residence in Toledo, nine days after suffering a stroke. She resided at Maple Crest in Bluffton since September of 2019. Wilda moved from Kansas to Bluffton in order to live near her daughter, a granddaughter and three grandchildren.

Wilda and David were married on November 7, 1945. Her husband David died April 15, 2005. Wilda’s eight sibling preceded her in death.

Every year the Bluffton Community Assistance Program completes a school supply handout to those in the community that need it or could use it.

The Bluffton Community Assistance Program is asking for the public's help by donating any new school supplies. The deadline to donate is Sunday, August 15. Items will be collected, sorted, and handed out on Saturday, August 21.

According to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, Icon viewers experienced a hot July 4 weekend as temperatures reached 90 degrees on July 5.

The average temperature for the month of July was 73.4.

Total precipitation was 4.69 inches. The average precipitation for July has been 3.80 inches.

Mary M. Schechter, 97, passed away August 5, 2021 at Willow Ridge - Betty House in Bluffton.

Mary was born September 21, 1923 in Alliance, Ohio to the late William "Wink" and Mabel (Wood) Worley.  On August 11, 1943 she married Carlyle Schechter who preceded her in death on December 6, 1990.
