Pirate boys nip Kenton 57-55

KENTON - Visiting Bluffton won a 57-55 nailbiter at WBL foe Kenton in a non-conference boys basketball battle Saturday night.

The Pirates led 10-5 after the first period and held a 24-21 edge at halftime. They led 37-33 after three quarters.

Bluffton canned 11 of 17 free throws in the final stanza to stave off the Wildcats as Kenton's Jayden Cornell scored nine late points. 

The Pirates improved to 17-4 with the road win. Meanwhile, Kenton fell to 11-10 with their third straight defeat.

COLUMBUS GROVE - Bluffton finished a strong third at the eight-team Northwest Conference championship wrestling meet hosted by Columbus Grove Saturday, February 15.

Defending champion Allen East won its ninth all-time NWC crown with 341 points to easily out-pace second-place Spencerville (223). Bluffton was a close third behind the Bearcats with 218.5 points.

Several Bluffton grapplers enjoyed fine tournaments.

Spring and fall coaching supplemental contracts

On school board's Monday agenda

Bluffton school board will act on a host of spring and fall supplemental coaching contracts on Monday.

The entire list is posted in the board agenda attached to this story.

In addition the board will act on the six contracts including three substitute teachers, one substitute educational aide and two state testing tutors.

Also on Monday’s agenda is the anticipated approval of the amounts and rates for the 2020 property tax estimates.

Ribbon cutting celebrates new Edward Jones office in Bluffton

Ryan DeMarco, his wife, Alicia, and their three children Hannah, Noah and Micah, cut the ribbon to Bluffton's newest Main Street business, an Edward Jones office at 111 N. Main St. The Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce held the ribbon event during the business open house on Friday.

Coronavirus vaccine underway

As the coronavirus outbreak continues, at least one company has said it is working on a vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson announced that Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies (a J&J subsidiary) has started to develop a vaccine against 2019-nCoV, the virus behind the outbreak that started in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, last month.

The company said it plans to use the same technologies as other vaccines for Ebola, Zika and RSV.

Electrophysiology lab opens at Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center

Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center has added a new tool to expand the treatment of heart disease with the opening of a new Electrophysiology Lab.

Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center was the first area hospital to perform minimally invasive transaortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures in 2018.

With the addition of the new lab – dedicated primarily to electrophysiology (EP) procedures – St. Rita’s team providers have the ability to perform EP procedures five days a week.
