Clayton Moore, a retired sergeant with the Fostoria Police Department and award-winning author, will present, “Why Me?,” at 11:00 a.m. on January 17 in Yoder Recital Hall on the campus of Bluffton University.
The author of the memoir “Good Cop, Black Cop: Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” reflects on times in life when we cry out to God. During the presentation, Moore will recount his struggle with and victory over racial discrimination as the first black police officer in a small town in northwestern Ohio.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Forum at Bluffton University is free and open to the public.
At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, individuals interested in Bluffton history will meet on the 3rd floor of the Bluffton Town Hall to discuss the formation of a Bluffton historical society.
The event was announced by Dan Groman, who is one of several Blufftonites who have renewed the idea of forming a local historical society and, ultimately, creating a Bluffton museum within the village.
Groman told the Icon that interest in a Bluffton Historical society has been simmering for decades. Visits to other Ohio communities and discussions with historical societies have led to this January meeting.
CONVOY–The Bluffton High School girls basketball team lost 55-32 to Crestview in a Northwest Conference contest Thursday night, January 5.
Bluffton dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the NWC with the lopsided road loss. The Lady Knights improved to 7-3 and 3-1 in NWC action after the convincing win.
Crestview junior Cali Gregory scored her 1,000th career point in the win, and she ended up with a game-high 21 points.
Ramon "Ray" Carl Lewis, 82, passed away January 3, 2023 at Mercy Health-St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. Ray was born April 5, 1940 in Bluffton to the late Arthur and Cleota "Cody" (Lanning) Lewis.
Ray was a graduate of Bluffton High School and later retired from Dana Corporation in McHenry, Illinois. Ray was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War and was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
ArtSpace/Lima will host the annual Juried Photography Exhibition from January 7-February 4, 2023. The exhibition features artists from around the region with over 100 works on display. Photographers from Ada Icon and Bluffton Icon readership areas include Wendy Chappell-Dick, Jake Collins and Rae Staton.
The photography exhibit has cash awards for Best of Show, First, Second, and Third Place, Black and White and Color Award, Youth Category, and an ArtSpace Award.
