The man with the derby hat

This could be your great-grandfather. Sorry to say, the young man from Bluffton is unidentified. Will Triplett took the portrait around 1900. The more you study the photo, the more things jump out at you. Check out our model's left hand, for example. Is that a pocket watch chain near his right hand?

A Bluffton "Volunteer"

The Icon spotted this Tennessee "Volunteer" plate in a university parking lot. The plate holder makes this driver a true Bluffton Volunteer.

Cookies just as the pumpkins leave the patch

Pumpkin cookies

1 cup shortening

1 cup granulated sugar

Mix together until creamy

1 cup pumpkin

1 egg

Mix into shortening-sugar combination

2 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix together and add to above combination

Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes

Frosting

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon margarine

Bluffton University fall choral concert Oct. 10

Bluffton University's annual fall choral concert is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, in Yoder Recital Hall. Free and open to the public, the concert will showcase three choirs: Camerata Singers and Accent!, each directed by Dr. Mark J. Suderman, and Bel Canto, directed by David Sawatzky. Anna Stembler-Smith will accompany both Accent! and Bel Canto on piano, while Allison Ringold will accompany Camerata Singers.

Former Bluffton instructor to discuss musical memoirs

Gerald Dyck, a voice teacher at Bluffton for two years in the 1970s, will return to campus Thursday, Oct. 14, for a presentation about his newly published memoirs, "Musical Journeys in Northern Thailand." Free and open to the public, the talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in 1 Mosiman Hall.

BFR offers free fitness classes offered Oct. 4-9

BFR Sports & Fitness is offering all its fitness classes without fees to encourage exercisers to try out group exercise. Both new and current participants are welcome.

Class choices include All Star Workouts on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m., YogaFit offered on Friday mornings at BFR and Wednesday nights at the Bluffton Public Library, and water exercise classes offered at Maple Crest Senior Living facility.

Jennica Biery's Cardio Sculpt is offered at 6 p.m. on Thursday nights. The popular, Zumba Dance Fitness class will resume on Monday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
