The achievements of Bluffton University’s class of 2020 were celebrated Saturday, July 18, during a socially-distanced, in person Commencement at Salzman Stadium. More than 80 percent of the graduating class, and up to two guests each, were in attendance for the delayed event.
In special recognition of this year’s class, each student was given a medallion featuring the Bluffton University presidential seal to wear as they walked the stage.
There’s a comet overhead in the Bluffton sky. This week is a good week to try to view it.
The Icon asked Mike Edmiston for details about the comet. His remarks follow:
The comet is called Neowise. It has passed behind the Sun and is now heading back out of the solar system. Between now and the end of July should be a good time to see it.
Comet Neowise is now in the Bluffton sky. Here's a photo taken by Andy Armstrong just after sundown in rural Bluffton. He used the night setting on his smart phone (Google Pixel 4). Click here for a story with additional details on the comet and how and where to look for it. The next photo in this series shows the comet in relation to the Big Dipper. The comet is below the Dipper and is low in the sky.
It was 2002 and Bluffton Kindergartners were probably singing "All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth." That makes this group either the Bluffton HS graduating class of 2015 or 2016.
As for historic, we consider any photo where we've lost track of who is in the photo as entering the historical realm. Even so, we've spotted some students who we've recognized.
We welcome viewers to offer identification of any student pictured.
With well over 40 entries, this photo struck a cord with Icon viewers. The cord struck by Derek Dukes was out-of-tune, and is the winner with several "atonal"** entries.
He offered three winning captions, plus one special mention, which follow:
• The winner: It's the longest socks I could find!
• Second place: Duct tape and garbage bags might not have been the best building materials.
• Honorable mention: I can't wait for the football players to Superfan for the golf team next year.
• Special mention: Can you letter for being a Superfan?
