Ski swap set Nov. 1

Mad River Mountain Ski Patrol's annual snow ski swap is planned Sunday, Nov. 1, according to Neil Hauenstein of Bluffton.

For persons selling items equipment check-in begins at 9 a.m. For persons buying items, sale hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items for sale include gently-used equipment including skis, boots, boards and clothing.

Bluffton Scouts participate with 52nd world-wide J.O.T.A. and campout

Bluffton scouts from Cub Pack 256 and Boy Scout Troop 256 participated with the 52nd Jamboree On The Air (J.O.T.A.) at the village park shelter house on Saturday morning, Oct. 17.

Diller, Carpenter, Conkling, Steiner honorees at Nov. 28 Blaze of Lights

Three long-time Bluffton community supports will serve as 2009 Blaze of Lights parade marshals and the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce CEO will turn on the Blaze lights during the Nov. 28, downtown Bluffton celebration.

According to Beverly Amstutz of the Bluffton Cultural Affairs Committee, parade marshals are Sam Diller, Bluffton attorney, Carlin Carpenter, former Bluffton University football coach, and Greg Conkling, Bluffton pharmacist. Fred Steiner, CEO of the Bluffton Chamber and creator of The Bluffton Icon, will turn on the lights of the Ream holiday folk art display.

Margaret Steiner celebrates 95th birthday

Lifelong Bluffton resident Margaret Steiner celebrates her 95th birthday on Oct 23, 2009.

Born in 1914 to Fred and Bertha (Althaus) Hahn, she graduated from Bluffton High School in 1932. She was the youngest of the Hahn children who were William, Lester, Howard and Florence.

Margaret lived most of her adult life at 201 N. Lawn Ave., in the home built by her maternal grandfather, Rudolph Althaus, a Swiss immigrant who was among the signers of a petition to change the name of Shannon to Bluffton.

Fudge orders taken by hospital auxiliary

Chocolates by Christie~Ac^a'not^a"cs on the Square are available to be ordered now through Friday, Nov. 6, as a holiday fundraiser from the Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary, according to Diane Stratton of the Auxiliary.

Items available include chocolate or peanut butter fudge by the one-half pound. Flavors and prices follow: candy bouquet $14, peanut butter fudge $7, chocolate fudge $7, box of turtles $12, holiday oreos $5.50.

99 songs on Katheryne Patterson's Oct. 24 birthday cake

Katheryne Patterson, who is known as the Bluffton elementary school music teacher by a generation of Baby Boomers, will celebrate her 99th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 24. She is a lifelong Bluffton resident and lives at Maple Crest.

Her list of community activities seems endless as she has always maintained a wide variety of interests, making her a Bluffton icon in her own right.

She was born to Albert and Anna (Leichty) Lugibill on Oct. 24, 1910, in Bluffton. Unknown to most people, a twin sister, Dorthea, died on the same day Katheryne was born.
