Bluffton council approves ambitious 2011 street repair program

Bluffton council okayed a 2011street maintenance program on Monday that, when added together in one length, extends for more than one mile.

Depending upon the funds available, the following projects will take place this year:

Snider Road turn lane addition at Main
3,200 feet - Snider Road - Main to corporation line
1,100 feet - Jackson Street - Grove to Church
1,900 feet - County Line Road - College to corporation line
125 feet - County Line - northbound to Main Street intersection
125 feet - County Line - State Route 103 north 125 feet
125 feet - North Jackson approach to Riley
100 feet - Franklin Street - Main to Jackson
870 feet - Vance Street - Cherry to State Route 103

If the budget allows, two other projects may be added to the street program. These include:

700 feet - Cherry Street - Main to Vance
Vine Street patching
Various street repairs

Each of the streets on the list have widths of 40 feet.

Spring cleanup
This spring's annual spring cleanup in Bluffton is May 28 to June 5. During that week dumpsters will be placed at the Spring Street recycling center.

In other council business, Clarence Bigleow told council that his property on Railroad Street was hit by the Feb. 28 flood largely due to dirt that has been added to the flood plain in recent years. He also complained that the village dumped large piles of snow north of College Avenue near Harmon Field. Those piles, when melting, made the flooding worse on his property.

Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, informed council that he has started contacting property owners of properties in the village that are in violation of either the zoning or the property maintenance code, or are habitually in violation.

He asked council members to report property that appears to be in violation.

The following meetings are on council's March and April agenda:

March 30 - Tree Commission, 7:30 p.m.
April 4 - Airport Advisory Commission, 8 p.m.
April 11 - Council personnel committee, 7:30 p.m.
April 11 - Council meeting, 8 p.m.
April 25 - Council meeting, 8 p.m.
