Guest columnist: Saying goodbye

By Tanya Pike

I have a friend who has been through a very tough year. His mother and stepfather died within days of each other. Less than a month later his house burned and was a total loss. He works crazy bad hours - 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. with three days on and two days off, seven days a week.

Yet, in the midst of all this badness, he has never lost his gentle spirit.

By Fred Steiner
Bluffton council discussed, but did not act upon a proposal on Oct. 26 that would mean no pay increases in 2010 for village employees. Generally the village has had annual salary increased close to the rate of inflation.

Since the village is experiencing lower revenue from its village income tax all village spending has slowed this year.

School board accepts $50,000 for Hankish Scholarship

By Mary Pannabecker Steiner

Thanks to the late Theda Hankish, the Bluffton School Board's October meeting was highlighted by the approval of the Hankish Scholarship Endowment Fund. Hankish, a lifelong Bluffton resident and longtime school teacher, left an endowment in the amount of $50,000 to the local school district, according to Greg Denecker, superintendent. The fund will generate an annual one-time $1,000 scholarship to a Bluffton High School student who plans to enter the teaching profession. The meeting was Oct. 19.
