The university students are enrolled in a class this semester about how to design math and science curriculum for grades kindergarten to third grade, according to Amy Lehman Mikesell, visiting professor of education at Bluffton University.

The university students used the Academic Content Standards for the State of Ohio to create activities for the first graders that aligned with what the first graders have studied this year.

The university students submitted plans for their station and provided all the materials. Math Day is set up much like "COSI on Wheels." The first grade students can choose which station they want to visit and how long they stay there.

"They love the freedom and flexibility to pick their favorites," said Mikesell. "This is the second year that Bluffton University and Bluffton Elementary have cooperated to put on Math Day.

This year first grade students learned about two dimensional and three dimensional objects, greater than and less than, time, money, place value, graphing, patterns and measurement.
