Two new stamps coming to Bluffton post office

Lunar new year stamp

Two new postage stamps are available in Bluffton this week.

On Jan. 22, the U.S. Postal Service issueed the fourth of 12 stamps in its Celebrating Lunar New Year series, which began in 2008 with the Year of the Rat. The Year of the Rabbit begins on Feb. 3, 2011, and ends on Jan. 22, 2012.

On Jan. 27 a stamp recognizing the 150th anniversary of Kansas statehood will be issued.

St. John's UCC host to Cupid's Cupboard and Cafe Feb. 12

Cupid's Cupboard and Cafe with a bake sale and lunch is planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 223 W. College Ave.

The cafe menu includes a selection of homemade soups, a hot chicken sandwich, relishes, pie and beverages.

Meals are $5 each. Ala carte items are $2.

Four Chaplains Sunday observed at Emmanuel UCC Feb. 6

The Bluffton American Legion Post 382 will commemorate Four Chaplains' Sunday on Feb. 6. Members of the Legion will attend the Emmanuel United Church of Christ morning worship service at 10 a.m. The church is at 8375 Phillips Road.

The commemoration is in conjunction with the Legion's observance of Religious Emphasis Week, Feb. 1 to 7.

Four Chaplains Sunday marks the 68th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Dorchester and the heroism demonstrated by four chaplains.

Beavers can't catch Transylvania (women's game)

The Bluffton University women's basketball team traveled to Lexington on Saturday, January 22 to take on Transylvania in HCAC action. The red-hot Pioneers bolted out to a 46-25 halftime lead and held Bluffton off for an 85-43 victory. Transylvania improved to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Bluffton slipped to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the HCAC.

Transylvania took an early 4-0 lead with a layin from Angel Lucas and a quick bucket by Shayla Black. Freshman Kim Meyer (Millbury/Lake) responded with a triple to bring the Beavers within one at the 17:45 mark.
