Transylvania earns #1 seed in HCAC tourney with 4-0 win at Bluffton

The Bluffton University men’s soccer team was defeated 4-0 by Transylvania University on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Beavers ended their 2012 campaign 2-15 overall and 0-8 in the Heartland Conference, while Transylvania improved to 15-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the HCAC.
The first half showcased the defense for both teams as neither squad was able to capitalize during the first 45 minutes of play. Bluffton fired six shots in the first half compared to 10 for Transylvania.
The second half started out with both teams fighting hard to put a goal on the scoreboard. The visitors knocked in their first tally at the 50:09 mark with an unassisted goal from Taylor Ballard. At the 69:07 mark, a scuffle broke out between Bluffton’s Dylan Matthews and Transylvania’s Daniel Mudd. Matthews received a second yellow card which removed him from the game, while Mudd earned a red card which also took him out of the competition. For the rest of the match both teams had to play with 10 players.
Transylvania’s second goal was scored at the 75:00 mark by Robbie Gorham. Less than four minutes later, Transylvania made it 3-0 when Christian King hit paydirt. With eight minutes to play, King put Transylvania’s fourth and final goal in the back of the net.
The Pioneers outshot Bluffton 18-8 while also forcing four more corner kicks (5-1). The total fouls for the game were 38 with Transylvania called for 20. Bluffton was led by Wes Corbin (Arlington) who had three shots. Matthews and Caleb Berlon (Kettering/Farimont) each took two and Neil Mast (Millersburg/Hiland) had one.
The Bluffton men's season comes to a close following the Senior Day matchup with Transylvania.
