Canadian theatre troupe performs story about Vietnam War conscientious objector
A Canadian theatre troupe, Theatre of the Beat, will perform "Gadfly: Sam Steiner Dodges the Draft," the story of Vietnam War conscientious objector, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in Bluffton University’s Ramseyer Auditorium in College Hall.
The performance is open to the public for a $5 suggested donation.
The drama is about Sam Steiner, now retired, who served for 30 years as librarian and archivist at Conrad Grebel University College, Waterloo, Ontario.
Drawing on the wealth of resources in the Mennonite Archives of Ontario, coupled with extensive interviews with Steiner, playwright Rebecca Steiner has illuminated interesting characters and captured issues faced as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. As a University of Waterloo student, she focused on pursuing acting and directing courses through the drama program.
These have led to directing a collaborative script, "Open, A Story of Refugee Claimants in Canada”, co-writing and performing in “Life as a River”, and now writing, directing and acting in “Gadfly.”
