Doris Hamman was a retired nurse
Doris Gene Hamman, 93, died Nov. 9, 2016, at Willow Ridge-Frieda House of Mennonite Home Communities, Bluffton.
Doris was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Allen County to the late Calvin and Huldah (Badertscher) Garmatter. On April 4, 1948, in Torre Pellice, Italy, she married Robert C. Hamman and he preceded her in death on July 26, 2002.
Doris joined the Ebenezer Mennonite Church, Bluffton, and was baptized when she was 13 years old. She was a 1941 graduate of Bluffton High School and worked one year at Triplett Corporation in Bluffton. Doris was a 1945 graduate of the Mennonite School of Nursing in Bloomington, Illinois.
She became night supervisor of Bluffton Hospital and later volunteered for 3 years with Mennonite Central Committee as a community health nurse in Italy. Doris worked as a nurse for Dr. F.D. Rodabaugh for 14 years, as a nurse for the Angeline Nursing Home at Lansdale, Pa., and for several years for Dr. Louis Harrod in Harrod. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, the Mennonite Women's Group, the Friendly Sunday School class, Harrod Women's Civic Club and a Bible study group.
Survivors include four daughters, Bobbie J. Hamman of Lima, Emilie R. Hamman of Lima, Doris Ann (Tom) Schumacher of Brookings, South Dakota, Martha E. (Randy) Eisele of Newport, Oregon; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a brother in law, Dean Sommers of Bluffton.
Doris was preceded in death a brother, Calvin L. Garmatter; and three sisters, Darlyn Sommers, JuLee Chidester and Marcene Traucht.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton. Pastor George O'Reilly officiating. A private burial will take place in Ebenezer Mennonite Cemetery, Bluffton. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
