Art as Activism invitational group exhibit opens Feb. 6
More than 20 artists will be part of “Art As Activism” an invitational group exhibit at Bluffton University. Opening Feb. 6, the exhibit is free and open to the public through Feb. 24. Gallery hours in the Sauder Visual Arts Center are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A reception for the artists will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.
According to Phil Sugden, assistant professor of art and art department chair, “Activist art is a term used to describe art that is grounded in the act of ‘doing’ and addresses political or social issues. The aim of activist artists is to create art that is a form of political or social currency, actively addressing cultural power structures rather than representing them or simply describing them. Activist art is about empowering individuals and communities.”
