Jasi Crawfis Lions peace poster contest winner
Jasemin “Jasi” Crawfis is the 2017 Bluffton Lions Club Lions International Peace Poster Contest winner.
Jasi is a 7th grade student at Bluffton Middle School, and the daughter of Jason and Jami Crawfis. Her winning picture will compete at the district level with winners sponsored by other Lions clubs in northwestern Ohio.
Entries were evaluated based on artistic merit, originality, and the best expression of this year’s contest theme, “The Future of Peace.”
Jasi’s colorful poster included a smart phone with buttons from the flags of many countries, suggesting the role of person-to-person communications in bringing about peace.
Second place is Lindsay Theis, daughter of Jon and Bethany Theis. Third place is Amber Gladwell, daughter of Paul and Ann Gladwell.
The posters entered by Bluffton Middle School art students are among over 600,000 submitted worldwide in the contest. Winners from the competition at different levels will advance to compete for an international grand prize and 23 merit awards.
Awards were presented at the noon Lions Club luncheon earlier this week by Bluffton Lions Club President, Coleen Lazar. Judging of the Bluffton Middle School entries was on Oct,.25 by Jerry Szabo, Carolyn Rich and Jan Emmert, chairman of this year’s contest. The judges commented that there was an unusually large number of thoughtful and competitive entries this year
The Bluffton Middle School has competed in the Peace Poster Contest for the past eight years, under the guidance of art teacher, Nicole Anderson, who uses the contest as a project in her art classes.
Last year’s local winner was Ellie Nickel. The winner two years ago, Luisa Dunlap, went on to receive recognition as the first place winner in the District Lions contest.
The Bluffton Lions Club is one of 46,000 Lions clubs in over 200 countries. These clubs share a common focus on activities related to vision and conquering blindness, helping youth, and a variety of local service activities, such as developing Bluffton’s bikeway paths, vision screening for children, scholarships, and the Festival of Wheels.
