Ted & Company on campus Nov. 5
Bluffton University’s upcoming Spiritual Life Week will feature a Ted & Company performance of “We Own This Now” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Yoder Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public; donations will be accepted at the door.
Starring Ted Swartz and Michelle Milne, “We Own This Now” looks at love of land, loss of land and what it means to “own” something.
Diving into historical documents, absurd situations, and extended metaphors, the audience discovers how the Doctrine of Discovery (the legal framework that justifies theft of land and oppression of Indigenous Peoples) is still being used and causing harm today.
“We Own This Now” provides a starting point for further conversation: What does it mean to “own” something? What is the relationship between “owning” and “taking”—and what is the relationship between “ownership” and (taking) responsibility?
At Bluffton, one week each semester is devoted to Spiritual Life Week, a special time for focusing on Christian life. Students play a major role in planning activities during the week that help strengthen growth and faithfulness in their relationship with God. The week includes guest speakers and special times of worship. The theme for this fall’s Spiritual Life Week is “Jesus: More than a Feeling.”
