Bias and privilege discussion
Dr. LaShonda Gurley, director of the Center for Career and Vocation at Bluffton University, will present, “Walking the Talk: Transforming the Dream into Reality,” at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, in Yoder Recital Hall.
During the presentation, Gurley will relate portions of King’s well-known and often quoted 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech to the areas of bias and the privilege we recognize in 2020.
“The young people of today are going to be the decision makers, the hiring managers and the teachers of tomorrow. We want to make sure they are prepared to work in a diverse society,” said Gurley. “We often think of King as a great theologian or a great philosopher, but I’m going to explore what he did in his everyday life to plant the seeds of fruition.”
With more than a decade of practical experience in diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education settings, Gurley will challenge participants to dig into Dr. King’s philosophy and legacy to connect with others in new ways.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Forum at Bluffton University, is free and open to the public.
