Pirate softball shut out at Carey

Pirates home opener vs. Arcadia is 5 p.m. on April 4

CAREY–Bluffton High School lost to Carey 10-0 in a non-league softball bout Friday evening, March 31.

The Pirates dropped to 2-1 after suffering their first loss.

The Blue Devils broke up a scoreless battle with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Carey plated three more runs in the home fourth to break the game open with a 6-0 lead.

Carey tallied two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to finish off the run-rule shortened contest.

Bluffton was out-hit by the hosts, 11-6.

Lauren Bassett smacked two singles to pace the Pirate offense. Olivia Hobensack, Olivia Matthews, Danielle Cross and Aubrey Edwards added one hit apiece.

Pirate starting pitcher Hannah Davis (2-1) struck out five Blue Devils and walked three in 5 2/3 innings. She allowed 11 hits and five earned runs.

Winning pitcher Kenzie Simons struck out seven, walked none and scattered six hits while hurling a six-inning shutout. 

Cleanup batter Rylee Row led Carey with a triple, double and three runs batted in. Simons contributed an RBI double. Kylie Orians added two hits, a run and one RBI.

The scheduled Pirate home twinbill vs. St. Marys (0-1) Saturday was rained out.

The Bluffton girls play at non-league foe Elida (1-0) Monday at 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, the Pirates host Arcadia (1-0) in the home opener at 5 p.m.
