Exploring “The Not-So-Secret" history of Bluffton University

Samantha Shrider ’12, director of institutional research and grants, presented “The Not-So-Secret History of Bluffton University” during Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Shrider explored the unexpected stories which emerged from an oral history project with faculty, staff and alumni to celebrate Bluffton University’s 125-year anniversary.  

Shrider’s goal for starting this oral history project was to honor and build on Bluffton’s past. Shrider interviewed around 80 faculty, staff and alumni ranging from recent 2023 graduates to a 1948 graduate. 

Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut: Almonds and health

“Sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don’t” was a classic TV commercial in the 1970s that advertised the candy bars Almond Joy and Mounds. Mounds is dark chocolate-covered coconut, while Almond Joy is milk chocolate-covered coconut with almonds. Mounds was introduced in 1921 and Almond Joy did not hit the market until 1946. Mounds was popular with the U.S. Military during World War II, which they purchased for soldier rations.

Bluffton MS Cross Country first at Allen County Invite

The Bluffton Middle School boys cross country team won first place at the Allen County Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Faurot Park in Lima. The Pirates were led by eighth grader Carter Steinmetz who won the two-mile race with a time of 11:48.6.

Eighth grader Tessa Tarplee won the girls two-mile race with a time 13:47.9.

Goodbye Gators, hello Pirates bowling!

Bluffton Schools have picked up bowling as a high school sport for 2024-2025. As the team announced on Facebook, they "are no longer the Gators but now part of the Pirate Crew."

A family meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 6 at Bluffton High School for all who are interested in learning more about the upcoming season and bowling as a high school sport.

Mitten Tree with Bluffton Community Assistance Program
Help decorate our tree with NEW mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, earmuffs/bands and umbrellas for all ages. Donations will be collected October through Mid-November and given to Bluffton Community Assistance Program. What a great way of being neighborly and helping others! 

Holiday Gift Silent Auction
The Bluffton Public Library is seeking donations for the upcoming Holiday Gift Silent Auction in November. Join us in raising funds to support library programming and services!
