Bluffton University students are part of a generation that holds the most hope yet "of making our national creed a reality," a longtime civil rights and racial reconciliation activist said at Bluffton Jan. 18.
Today's young people constitute "a post-racial generation," according to John Perkins, the speaker at the university's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Forum. Americans should be "rejoicing" at having their first black president, he asserted, saying the United States can now possibly become the "one nation" the Founding Fathers desired.

The Bluffton University men's basketball team used a dominating performance to upend HCAC rival Earlham College on Saturday, January 15. The Beavers upped their record to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in the Heartland Conference. Earlham slipped to 0-8 in HCAC action and 2-13 for this season.
The Bluffton University women's basketball team knocked off Heartland Conference rival Earlham College 60-40 on Saturday, January 15, in Founders Hall. Bluffton improved to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the HCAC. Earlham dropped to 0-8 in the conference and 0-15 on the season. The Quakers' 40 points marked a season-low for the Bluffton defense.
The Bluffton University men's basketball team hosted the Spartans of Manchester College on Wednesday, January 12. The Beavers held a slim 36-34 advantage at the break before outscoring the Spartans 47-38 in period two. Bluffton picked up another win, bumping its record to 10-4 overall and 3-4 in the Heartland Conference. The Spartans fell to 9-5 and 5-2 in the HCAC.
The Bluffton University women's basketball team fell to Heartland Conference rival Manchester, 58-57, on Wednesday, January 12, in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. Manchester improved to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in the HCAC. Bluffton dropped to 2-5 in the conference and 5-9 on the season.
The Beavers took a 10-2 lead following a Brittany Lewis (Springfield/Shawnee) jumper in the paint at the 14:46 mark. Less than two minutes later, back-to-back baskets by Lauren Hutton (New Riegel) gave the Beavers a 10-point advantage over the Spartans.
