North Main parking expands by 24 spots

Chamber will install directional signs in village for visitors

There’s a new municipal parking lot in Bluffton and this week it gets its stripes.

Village-owned property north of the fire station on North Main Street was paved in the past month. It will soon have 24 parking spaces, Jesse Blackburn, village administrator, told council members on Monday.

Of those spaces at least four will be reserved for fire department use.

The village purchased two properties north of the station several years ago anticipating either expansion of its fire station or for use as a parking lot.

2020 swimming pool revenues fall flat

Originally projected at $66,000; looks more like $33,000

This should come as no surprise – 2020 Bluffton Community Swimming Pool receipts fell flat, thanks to covid-19.

According to a report by Bluffton council's parks and recreation board, initial pool receipt projections of $60,000 look more like $33,000.

Several village expenses came before Bluffton council on Monday.

The Bluffton Community Swimming Pool –  Some seams on the pool bottom are being replaced.

 An additional 4-inch equalization value is being added to the deep well to ensure pressure from water table does no further damage to the pool.

Will enter executive session to discuss hiring

Bluffton school board puts final touches on the start of the 2020-21 school year at its meeting on Monday. The agenda also includes a planned executive session to discuss employment of personnel.

Two resignation and several new classified employee hirings is on the agenda. Cheryl Morris and Leisa Stratton announced their resignations.

Council reviewing police department vacation issues

Covid-19 and several other issues causing scheduling challenges

Taking no action, Bluffton council reviewed scheduling issues in its police department during Monday’s council meeting.

The situation, reported by the council personnel and finance committee, which met on Aug. 5, specifically concerns vacation time.

The department has challenges due to several events, including a pregnancy and two surgeries involving officers.

Combined with that, Police Chief Ryan Burkholder anticipates problems scheduling vacations due to the continuous full-time department work during the covid-10 period that began in March.

Bike racks coming to Main Street

Bentley Road pathway extension ribbon cutting in September

Bluffton council heard updates on several bike-related topics on Monday.

Bluffton’s council streets and alleys committee, meeting Aug. 4, reported that bike racks will soon appear in several Main Street locations, encouraging the use of bicycles in the village.

Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Allen County Health Department’s "Creating Healthy Communities,” bike riders will have 17 places to park on Main Street.

2021 village budget estimated at $4.1 million

General fund listed at $2.5 million

Bluffton council is looking at a projected $4.1 million 2021 village budget. Discussed at the July 27 council meeting, the budget must be approved and sent to the Allen County commissioners by the end of July.

Then, in December, council takes the budget and it becomes 2021 allocations. Several changes could take place in the village financial document between now and the end of the year.
