Bath downs Bluffton netters

The visiting Bluffton girls tennis lost to Bath 4-1 Wednesday evening.

The Lady Pirate netters dropped to 3-8 with the defeat. The hosts improved to 7-5 with the win.

Bluffton sophomores Alyssa Hoffman and Leah Klingler teamed up to post the Pirate win at second doubles. 

The duo rallied to win 4-6, 7-6 and 10-8 in a decisive third-set tiebreaker.

Bath won each of the other four matches in straight sets.

The Pirate girls host St. Marys (5-6) Monday, September 20, and then entertain Van Wert (5-6) September 21.

Pirate linksters beat Leipsic

The Bluffton boys golf team finished second in a three-team league tri-match at Hidden Creek Golf Club Tuesday evening, September 14.

Bluffton defeated Leipsic 167-176, but lost to Northwest Conference leader Allen East 160-167. AE defeated the Vikings 160-176 to stay atop the NWC at 13-1.

Pirate Kenny Lovett carded a round of 40 to pace the Bluffton linksters. 

Jacob Boisvert and Wes Brauen each added a score of 42. Jaden Coonfare shot 43 to round out the Pirate scorers.

University golf recap at Ken Venturi Invitational

The Bluffton University men's golf team traveled to Trine University for the Ken Venturi Invitational on a hot Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021. This annual event, which Bluffton's golfers have already marked on their calendar for 2022, consists of players in pairs who are competing in three different partner events. Holes 1-6 were contested as a scramble, 7-12 were best ball, and 13-18 was modified alternate shots with both players driving and then alternating after the best tee shot was used. The format was adopted by long-time Trine men's golf coach Bill SanGiacomo.

Bluffton boys soccer bests Knights, 3-1

The visiting Bluffton boys soccer team defeated Van Buren 3-1 in a non-league match Tuesday night.

Bluffton improved to 5-2-1 with the victory. The Black Knights dropped to 3-2 with the defeat.

VB scored the first goal 4:37 into the fray.

But Bluffton tied it quickly on a Nolan Hoffman netter just 1:56 later on an assist from Ethan Oglesbee.

The game stayed 1-1 into halftime and beyond. Junior Hoffman then gave the Pirates the lead on a goal at the 60:08 juncture off an assist from senior Kaden Basil.

Lady Pirate spikers sweep T-Birds

The host Bluffton volleyball team swept county rival Lima Central Catholic to record their fifth consecutive win Tuesday night.

The Pirate girls improved to 7-2 with the 25-20, 25-15, 25-16 non-league victory.

Freshman Ayla Grandey topped the Pirate hit parade with 11 kills.

Senior middle hitter Kylie Stackhouse contributed 10 kills, six aces and two blocks.

Bluffton senior setter Skyler Scoles passed out 30 assists.

Senior Kylie Monday mustered six digs and classmayte Haelynn Bischoff contributed six kills.

Bluffton spikers sweep NB

The host Bluffton volleyball team swept local non-league foe North Baltimore in three sets Monday night, September 13.

The Pirate girls improved to 6-2 with the 25-9, 25-17, 25-19 win, while NB dropped to 4-5 with the defeat.

Senior middle hitter Kylie Stackhouse topped the Pirates with 10 kills and two blocks.

Bluffton senior setter Skyler Scoles doled out 21 assists, made one block and served five aces.

Senior Sophie Bricker hustled up 11 digs, while classmate Kylie Monday came up with with three digs and contributed six kills.
