E. Irene Baumgartner worked at Pandora-Gilboa High School

E. Irene Baumgartner, 96, passed away October 11, 2023, at Mennonite Memorial Home.  

Irene was born August 20, 1927 in Watson, Saskatchewan, Canada to Enos and Winnfred (Mounsey) Suter who preceded her in death. On June 21, 1947 she married Dwight Baumgartner who preceded her in death on April 5, 2023. (View Dwight's obituary HERE.)

Alfred Paul Heldman served in the U.S. Army

Alfred Paul Heldman, 87 of Jenera went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Toledo Hospital.  He was born at home in Eagle Township on March 18, 1936, to the late Franklin and Ida (Schaller) Heldman. He was baptized on May 3, 1936, started attending Trinity Lutheran School in 1948 in the 7 th grade, the year the school opened, and then confirmed on May 14, 1950.

Pirate volleyball sweeps Grove, finish 3rd in NWC

The Bluffton High School volleyball team swept visiting Columbus Grove in a Northwest Conference match Tuesday evening, October 10, to end the regular season.

The Pirates improved to 17-4 overall and finished 6-2 in the NWC with the decisive 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 win. 

The Pirates finished in third place in the league standings after the sweep. Crestview won at 8-0, followed by Leipsic in second at 7-1. The Vikings swept Ada Tuesday night to secure second place.

Bluffton community policing efforts recognized with honor from Ohio Chiefs of Police

The Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police Law Enforcement Foundation has recognized the Bluffton Police Department as the October 2023 Agency of the Month. Outstanding community policing efforts are highlighted by the agency's “Sharing Ohio’s Best” program, an opportunity to promote positive policing.

The agency’s Community Relations and Engagement committee states, “Chief Burkholder and his team have certainly used creativity and relationships to build upon their community policing strategy. They have successfully incorporated a variety of programs for all age groups in their community…. We applaud Chief Burkholder and his agency for their hard work, but we also commend the entire community for accepting quality police programming as a part of the fabric of where they live, work and play.”
