BHS boys basketball: 58-47 loss in Spencerville showdown

At the end of three quarters, the defending league champion Bluffton High School boys basketball team was tied with first-place Spencerville in a Northwest Conference showdown on Friday night, January 27. But the Bearcats outscored Bluffton 23-12 in the final quarter and posted a 58-47 win.

Bluffton led 13-9 after one quarter before 6-5 junior Carter Sudhoff scored eight points in the second stanza to lead the hosts to a 16-5 period and a 25-19 halftime lead.

The Pirates overcame a seven-point deficit to forge a 35-35 knot heading to the final stanza.

Pirate sophomore Marek Donaldson netted eight of his 13 points in the third quarter.

Bluffton fell to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the NWC with the defeat. First-place Spencerville improved to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in the NWC after the win.

Weekend Doctor: Telehealth coverage

As we begin 2023, it is hard to believe that nearly three years have passed since the federal government initially declared a public health emergency (PHE). With the declaration of the PHE, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other commercial payers adjusted coverage policies, and the doors for telehealth were opened for a whole new world of healthcare to emerge.

J. Denny and Jenny will be revealed January 28

On January 28, between the men’s and women’s basketball games against Transylvania University, Bluffton University will reveal which students are in the J. Denny and Jenny Beaver suits. The men’s game starts at 2:00 p.m. in the Sommer Center, and the reveal is expected to take place at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Snow day portrait

Ava Gleason, age 5, took advantage of her snow day on January 25 to create a snow portrait of her mom, Ashley. While forecasts were ominous, the day's weather resulted in more slush than snow. Men's Basketball

The Bluffton University men's basketball team slipped to 4-14 overall and 2-9 in the Heartland Conference after falling 85-78 following an exciting double-overtime matchup in Sommer Center against Anderson University on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023. HCAC-heavyweight Anderson University improved to 12-6 on the season and 10-1 to remain at the top of the conference.

Lima mayor shares lessons of leadership during Bluffton forum

During Bluffton University’s Jan. 24 Presidential Leadership Forum, “Journey to Leadership,” Sharetta Smith spoke about the challenges as well as the successes on her path to becoming Lima’s first African American mayor and first female mayor in its nearly 200-year history.

Her journey included hardships such as being raised by essentially a single mother while her father was incarcerated, raising three children as a young, single parent, and surviving cancer in her late 20s.
