Mabel Irene Howard worked for Hunt, Morris and Johnson law offices

Mabel Irene Howard, 95, passed away at 8:44 p.m. on October 15, 2023, at Mercy Health - St. Rita's Medical Center

Mabel  was born November 10, 1927, in Bluffton, OH, to the late Otis Christian and Rhoda Katherine (Amstutz) Burkholder. On March 18, 1972, she married Estill "Eddie" Howard who preceded her in death on April 25, 2010.

Donita Louise Luginbill was a teacher

Donita Louise Luginbill, 82, passed away October 19, 2023 at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. Donita was born June 23, 1941 in Bluffton to the late Myron and Norma (Luginbuhl) Luginbill.

Registration is open for youth basketball

Registration is open for Bluffton Family YMCA (BFR) youth basketball.

Kindergarten through 3rd grade basketball starts on Jan. 9 and ends Feb. 8, with meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Games are 5:30 p.m./6:30 p.m. The cost is $30/members and $60/nonmembers. The deadline to register is Dec. 10.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Dennis Sheidler

Bluffton Public Library will be hosting Dennis Sheidler at 6:00 p.m. on Tues., Oct. 24 for his presentation of “Hiking the Appalachian Trail.” 

Dennis Sheidler, at the age of 75, completed the Appalachian Trail through a series of section hikes, from Georgia to Maine. For this presentation, he will be sharing his experiences, along with plenty of photos and time for questions.

Pirate boys soccer nipped in sectionals by Old Fort

The Bluffton High School boys soccer team lost a 3-2 overtime nailbiter to visiting Old Fort in Div. III sectional semifinal action Wednesday evening, Octoberr 18, at Steinmetz Field.

The sixth-seeded Pirates end their season 5-11-2 after the difficult defeat. 

OF improves to 8-7-3 with the win, and advances to the sectional finals. The eighth seed Stockaders now visit third-seeded Van Buren (10-6) Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon for the right to advance to districts.

Pirate Northwest Conference Player of the Year Theo Andreas drew first blood when he found the back of the net in the eighth minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 to intermission and beyond. OF eventually tied it in the 51st minute on a goal by Andrew Tackett.
