A 4-year-old remembers Bluffton threshing days

James Bertsche of Goshen, Indiana, sent the following account of threshing day as he remembers it on the Bertsche farm in Bluffton. The farm stands on the southeast corner of State Route 103 and County Line Road. His recollection is based on what he remembers as a 4-year-old, watching.

Here's his account:
Threshing day at the Bertsche farm was a biggie. I would stand under a walnut tree along the gravel road past the farm watching down the road to the south for the rig to come into view . .wide, high steel wheels crunching the gravel, black smoke flying.

A llive llama llumbering allong Main Street

Mike Gerken and his 21-month-old granddaughter, Audra Snyder, take a Saturday afternoon stroll in downtown Bluffton. Tagging along on the end of Audra' s leash is Divine Design, a one-year-old female llama. The llama was among several Hard Rock Llama Company's animals on display at the May 22 Bluffton Arts and Crafts Show.

A tale of two photos

Here's the situation. You have two great photos of a 21-month-old girl tugging at the reins of her pet llama as she and her grandfather stroll down Main Street. Not a scene you see everyday. Problem is, you can't decide which photo you like the best.

One shot is from the front. It shows facial expressions and the action moves toward you. The other shot is from the back. No faces in view. The subjects could represent anyone...you and your own granddaughter, or your neighbor's, for example. The action passes you by and heads into the distance.

-Officers responded to the university and took a report of a stolen laptop from a dorm room.

-Officers discovered several juveniles on top of an abandoned building.
May 4
-Police took an assault complaint from a Matterhorn Dr. resident.
-Police received a complaint from an Eastland Dr. resident who reported someone had stolen numerous lawn ornaments from the residence.

Senior center offers crochet class in June

The Bluffton Senior Center will offer a Beginner Crochet Class in June. The class will offer a brief history of crocheting, learn five basic stitches and how to read a pattern.

The class will be Tuesday, June 15 and June 22 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for Senior Center members, $7 for non-members and children under the age of 14 are free with a paying adult.

Crochet hooks and yarn will be provided at the first class. Reservations can be made by calling 419-358-8971 or stop by the Bluffton Senior Center during regular business hours.

Perfect attendance pays off at Apollo

Apollo Career Center will award a new car to one lucky student with perfect attendance., Monday, May 24, at 9:40 a.m., in the Apollo Commons. A reverse drawing of sorts, at the end two students will each be handed a set of keys. One set will start the car, and the runner-up receives a brand new Gateway computer.

Many businesses donated a variety of prizes to this year's perfect attendees and as each student's name is pulled from the basket that student will be awarded gas cards, pizzas, subs, etc. Forty-seven students are entered in this year's contest
