This meandering train-of-thought piece I hereby dedicate to Ring Lardner, champ of this writing genre. It also enables me to misspell words and get away with it.

After escaping last week's snow drift (think Herman Melville's White Whale), I decided to set things straight in my life.

A little band music on Sunday in Yoder Recital Hall

The Bluffton University Concert Band, Bluffton Chamber Winds, and Jazz Ensemble will perform their annual Winter Instrumental Concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in Yoder Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey D. Boehm, professor of music, will perform several selections. Some selections include: "Circus Days March" by Karl L. King, two movements from "Merry Mount Suite for Band" by Howard Hanson and all movements of W. Francis McBeth's "Of Sailor's and Whales: Five Scenes from Melville."

Openings remain in March 3 book discussion

It's not too late to join the early March book discussion at Common Grounds. Read "Teach with Your Heart," by Erin Gruwell and join community members for a friendly, informal discussion at Common Grounds in Bluffton at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 3. Advance registration is requested. A limited number of discussion copies are available at the Bluffton Public Library.

Alaska String Band warms up town hall tonight

The Alaska String Band will perform in the first-ever town hall concert series at 7p.m., Monday, Feb. 15. The event is sponsored by the Bluffton Cultural Affairs Committee. Admission is by donation. Concessions are available.

Dow Jones Snow Shadow Theory

A new way to predict the Dow Jones averages unveiled itself this winter. Joining the fundamentalists and the technical theorists is the Snow Shadow theorists. This snow shadow on a Bluffton sidewalk resembles the Dow Jones over a period of time. If only one can figure out where today's closing is on the chart, there may be money to be made.
