Art of Phil Sugden featured at OSU Lima gallery

Gallery opening and research talk

Artist Philip Sugden will be at OSU LIma's Farmer Family Gallery from 4:00-6:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 18, 2024, to open his new show Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God, an installation drawing series that explores Sugden’s experiences in Tibet and the Himalayas over 40 years. Each work has seven layered pages and incorporates current and ancient sacred texts. Sugden is a local artist and an assistant professor of art at Bluffton University.

Pirate girls basketball caged by Panthers

PAULDING__The Bluffton High School girls basketball team fell behind early and lost 46-33 at former Northwest Conference foe Paulding Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates dropped to 5-7 with the defeat, while the Panthers improved to 5-5 after the double-digit win. 

It was the second straight game the Pirates could only muster 33 points in a loss.

Paulding led 11-6 after the first period, and extended their lead slightly to 21-15 at halftime. Bluffton stayed within striking distance, down 29-21 heading to the final stanza.

Ike Geiger: Famous BHS alumnus

Ivan “Ike” J. Geiger
Aug. 10, 1909 – Jan. 12, 1955

  • Bluffton High School class of 1927
  • Bluffton College class of 1932

Through his example as an educator believing that educating the “whole person” involved blending education and athletics, Ivan “Ike” J. Geiger promoted this idea with great success.

Described in the Bluffton News in the 1940s as one of the Bluffton community’s all-time athletic luminaries – excelling in sports at Bluffton High School and Bluffton College – he became the first-ever director of athletics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, holding that post from 1947 to until his untimely death in 1955.
