Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness Breweries in Dublin, Ireland, contemplated how one could verify who was first in the world. The Guinness World Records were born. His idea intrigued twin brothers Norris and Ross McWhirter to publish the Guinness Book of World Records. The first book hit the bestseller list by Christmas of 1955. The book is currently published in 100 countries in 23 languages. The publisher maintains over 53,000 records.

Bluffton Village Council met on Monday, May 8 with a one-page agenda that didn't suggest any drama, with only this reporter and Jim Enneking of the Chamber of Commerce occupying the public gallery. Last meeting, Jim had a very aromatic coffee which competed for my attention; this time I brought my own hot drink. All elected officials and village administrators were in attendance except for Fire Chief Jon Kinn.

Pirate tennis win vs. Kenton

The Bluffton High School boys tennis team defeated Kenton 3-2 Tuesday evening, May 9.

The Pirates captured all three singles matches to improve their record to 6-10 this season. The Wildcats fell to 3-12 after the loss.

Pirate softball nips AE in sectional slugfest

Visiting Allen East slammed four home runs, but the Bluffton High School softball team edged the rival Mustangs 14-13 in a seesaw Div. III sectional semifinal thriller Tuesday evening, May 9.

The Mustang girls fell to 10-10 with the defeat, while the Pirates improved to an identical 10-10 mark with the narrow win.

Cline earns First Team All-HCAC honors

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) has announced its women's golf All-Conference team. The team features Beaver sophomore Kiley Cline (Fostoria/St. Wendelin). She becomes the first Bluffton women's golfer in school history to earn all-conference honors.
