Thomas W. “Tom” Truman managed Bluffton University bookstore

Thomas W. “Tom” Truman, age 81, of Lima, peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 7:07 p.m.

He was born on November 26, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio to the late Russell and Virginia (Miller) Truman.  On September 21, 1959, Thomas married Delores Wright and she preceded him in death on November 2, 2021.

BHS boys basketball trounces McComb

The Bluffton High School boys basketball team raced to a huge halftime lead and trounced visiting McComb 66-32 in a non-league game Saturday night, December 10.

The Pirates led 16-4 after the first period, and the hosts ballooned the margin to 38-10 at halftime. Bluffton drained seven of their 10 trifectas in the first half.

A 20-8 third period stretched the Bluffton cushion to 40 points heading to the final stanza.

Bluffton mystery beasts, part 2

Remember the Bluffton mystery animal from 1956 posted on the Icon last week? (Read the article HERE.)

Well, it returned in 1958–or perhaps a close relative showed up, instead. Several Bluffton residents reported large animal sightings in the fall of 1958. Those sightings continued well into 1959, reported in the Bluffton News.

Here are accounts from the Bluffton News about the 1958 bobcat, wildcat, puma, or whatever it was.

But, as a preamble, check out this news item from the Feb. 5, 1925, Bluffton News: A 75-pound timber wolf was killed by a posse of Hardin County farmers near Ada last week. 

The killing of the wolf is believed to solve the mystery of the loss of large numbers of livestock whose half devoured carcasses have been found on the edge of the marsh during the past two years. A.D. Eply fired the shot which crippled the wolf before it was clubbed to death by the farmers.

Weekend Doctor: Care for chronic illness

It was the last meaningful conversation that I would have with my grandfather. It involved a deeper level discussion about what it means to be a caregiver for a loved one facing Alzheimer’s disease. He looked at me with his pale blue eyes and said, “Now take our story and do something great. If anyone can take our pain and do something to help others, it is you.” As a granddaughter, educator and an occupational therapist, I have taken these words to heart. I think of my grandparents daily in the work that I do and the privilege I have had in serving others as a healthcare provider and educator. A critical and important part of health care I learned about during our journey with Alzheimer’s disease involved two different models of care: palliative and hospice care. While many believe palliative care and hospice to be the same, they are actually quite different.

BHS girls basketball falls at Delphos

DELPHOS--The visiting Bluffton High School girls basketball squad lost 46-29 to league co-favorite Delphos Jefferson in the tip-off to their Northwest Conference schedule Thursday evening, December 8.

The Pirate girls dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the NWC with their second loss in a row. 

Meanwhile, the Wildcat girls improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the NWC with the win.

The Pirates led 7-4 after a low-scoring first period. But DJ took control with an 18-8 second quarter to grab a 22-15 lead at halftime.
