Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a seventh Natural Wonder of the World.  It is an impressive testament to the power of water.  The canyon was formed millions of years ago when water drained off the Rocky Mountains to form the Colorado River.  The river ultimately carved a canyon 227 miles long and at some points 10 miles wide.  

The Grand Canyon is an example of the quote by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. “In the confrontation between stream and the rock, the stream always wins, not through strength but by perseverance” is an inspirational quote in his publication Life’s Little Instruction Book, written for his son going to college.  His book was on the New York Times best seller list for over two years.  

So, why is a pharmacist writing about the Grand Canyon? Well, it has more to do with perseverance than forging water through rocks!

Blufftonites share ideas, answer dot polls

Findlay author with Bluffton ties has humorous view of growing up in the '50s and '60s

If you met author Barbara Lockard during the years she worked in Bluffton for Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, you might not even know that she is a writer. You might not know that she is wickedly funny–and I don’t mean that in a Halloween sense.

But you will have your chance if you come to hear Lockard and her sister Karen Striet at noon on Tuesday, October 25 at the Bluffton Public Library. A resident of Findlay, Lockard spent the first year of the COVID andemic writing on her blog, “Old and Slow and Turning White.” I’ve laughed aloud many, many times at the memories–often fond and always cynical–that Lockard writes about.

Pirate Coonfare 1st team NWC golf

Bluffton High School senior ace Jaden Coonfare was named first team All-Northwest Conference in golf by the league recently.

Coonfare was the number one golfer for the Pirates this season.

Senior Aiden Sponsler was named second team All-NWC. 

Pirate senior teammates Jacob Boisvert and Eli Wenger also made honorable mention all-league.

Brevin Brandt of league champion Leipsic won conference Player of the Year honors.

Viking mentor Kevin Brandt was named NWC Coach of the Year.

Pirate Grandey on All-NWC 2nd volleyball team

Bluffton High School sophomore volleyball player Ayla Grandey was named second team All-Northwest Conference in voting by the league coaches recently.

Grandey led the team in kills to help the Pirates finish 13-10 overall and 4-4 in the NWC.

Sophomore setter Gracie Yarnell and sophomore libero Avery Talavinia were named honorable mention all-league.

Allen East junior hitter Soraya Jackson was tabbed NWC Player of the Year.

4 Pirate boys 1st team All-NWC soccer

Three Bluffton High School seniors and one junior from the league title team earned first team All-Northwest Conference boys soccer honors in voting recently conducted by the league coaches.

Seniors Eden Antrim, Justin Good and Nolan Hoffman made first team All-NWC, along with junior Pirate teammate Kyle Basil.

Junior Ben Hartzler made second team all-league, as did seniors Luke Shepherd and Ethan Oglesbee.

Junior Theo Andreas made honorable mention all-league.
