Bluffton University to offer MSW degree with mental health specialization

Bluffton University will offer a Master of Social Work (MSW) graduate degree with a mental health specialization starting in the 2023-24 academic year. The program will be conducted in partnership with Goshen College and is pending Higher Learning Commission approval.

BHS boys XC 7th at VW meet; Nygaard 2nd, Essinger 8th

The Bluffton boys cross country team finished seventh at the 17-team Van Wert County Hospital meet at the reservoir course Saturday.

Lincolnview won with 76 points, followed by host Van Wert (99).

Senior Erik Nygaard finished an impressive second out of 150 runners to pace the Pirates. He crossed the finish line 7.5 seconds behind race winner Noah Williams of Shawnee.

Pirate senior Sam Derstine finished a solid 19th.

The Pirate boys posted a solid average time of 17:50 per runner.

BHS volleyball 6th at Minster Invite

The Bluffton varsity volleyball team finished sixth at the tough eight-team Minster Invitational Saturday, September 24.

Winning one of three matches at the event dropped the Bluffton record to 10-5 this season.

Bluffton lost to Tri-Village two sets to one in the first round. The Pirates won the first set 25-11, but lost the next two 25-19, 25-21.

In the consolation bracket first round, Bluffton swept Bowsher 25-12, 25-16.

Then in the fifth-place match, the Pirates lost to West Liberty Salem 25-19, 25-14.

Cory-Rawson Homecoming Court

Cory-Rawson High School celebrated homecoming this past weekend with a Friday night, September 23, game vs. North Baltimore. The homecoming dance on September 24 was themed "A Night Under the Stars."

Bicycle mania strikes Bluffton in the 1890s

Harry Fenton fell off his bicycle Sunday, and dislocated his thumb and little finger and seriously injured the middle finger of his left hand. – 1896 Bluffton News 

This story may not make news today, but 126 years ago, it was a worthy news item in the Bluffton News. 

Why? Because, in the mid-1890s Bluffton, like much of the nation, caught itself up in a two-word phrase: bicycle mania.
