October 2010: warmer and drier than average Octobers

October was warmer and drier than previous Octobers, according to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer.

In the month just past the average daily temperature was 55.5 degrees. The normal October average daily temperature is 52.1 degrees.

Maximum temperature was 89 on Oct. 10

Minimum temperature was 29 on Oct. 22

October 2010 precipitation was 1.37 inches

Normal October precipitation 2.27 inches

"Stick to it" membership special offered in November at BFR

BFR will run the popular Stick to It Membership Special through the month of November. Participants will purchase a one-month membership for $30 and receive a second month membership for free if they complete 12 workouts at the building.

Adam Burris new sport coordinator at BFR Sports & Fitness

Adam Burris has been hired as the new sport coordinator by Bluffton Family Recreation. The Bluffton native started the position on Oct. 18.

Burris is a recent graduate of Bluffton University and worked previously
at BFR while a student. The sport coordinator is responsible for all sport leagues and tournaments sponsored by the non-profit sports and

Blanchard Valley Health Foundation offers assistance to junior golfers

The Blanchard Valley Health Foundation now offers an opportunity for training and development to area junior golfers through the new Julie Cole Golf Fund. The fund was created with a portion of the proceeds from the 2010 Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic held June 7.

The Julie Cole Golf Fund offers junior golfers in Hancock County the opportunity to participate in a summer camp at the Dana Rader Golf School in Charlotte, N.C.

Icon viewers pick "Grand Shannon" as the number one tagged trout of 2011

The Icon viewers have spoken. The 2011 Bluffton Sportsmen's Club tagged trout number one will be called "Grand Shannon." The name was chosen when the club invited The Icon to run a viewers' poll.

Three names were voted on by viewers. Nearly 50 viewers participated in the poll. The winner, Grand Shannon, captured 71 percent of the votes. Second was Shannon at the Rileys, with 22 percent. Third was Shannon of Old, with 7 percent.

The Icon wishes to thank the Sportsmen's Club to allow us to provide a poll where residents could assist in naming the tagged trout.
