Pirate boys soccer wraps regular season, takes loss to Kalida

The Bluffton High School boys soccer team surged late from an early deficit but lost 4-3 to visiting Kalida Thursday night, October 12, at Steinmetz Field in a non-league match to end the regular season.

Bluffton dropped to 5-10-2 overall after the defeat.

Attention drivers: it's a good time to take a detour from Main Street. Businesses are open and easily accessible from cross streets. Thanks to moderating weather conditions, paving has begun and will continue as long as conditions are warm enough and dry enough for the asphalt to cure properly.

Bluffton council considers accessory dwelling unit legislation

Is “accessory dwelling unit” (ADU) in your vocabulary? Also known as granny flats, ADUs are stand-alone dwellings located on the same lot as a single family home. The Bluffton council’s Ordinance Committee is drafting a proposed ordinance to make ADUs a recognized type of housing with local oversight.

Housing shortages are creating new interest in ADUs in Ohio and across the country. New ADU legislation has been reported in Cincinnati, considered to be the first Ohio city to legalize granny flats.

The Swiss Community Historical Society is repurposing an early Swiss Settlement barn to create an addition to the Schumacher Homestead. The society notes, "JCM Timberworks, from Killbuck, Ohio is expertly using the massive sky crane, wooden mallets, the come-a-long, files and man and woman power" to get the job done.

Halloween music included in concert band performance

Bluffton University’s fall instrumental concert featuring the Concert Band will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Dr. Roy Couch, associate professor of music, selections will include three dances – “Danza Magicala,” “Lithuanian Dance,” and “Prelude and Polka,” as well as settings of familiar hymn tunes such as “Precious Lord, Take my Hand” and The “Water is Wide.” In anticipation of Halloween, “Ghost Apparatus” will get the audience in the mood. 

This event is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken for music scholarships.

Funeral arrangements for Sue Anne Yant

Sue Anne Yant, 72, of Six Mile, South Carolina was born February 01, 1951 in Bluffton, Ohio. She passed away peacefully on September 22, 2023 surrounded by family. Sue was a 1969 graduate of Bluffton High School.  She will be deeply missed by family and all who knew her.
