Just when you think you've seen every possible vanity plate a new one comes into view. Take this one for example. It's a Pennsylvania plate. The Icon spotted it on West College Avenue near Bren-Dell Hall.

Gable-Sprague, Geiser-Diller duos keep winning

Bluffton High School's girls' tennis team swept the doubles, but lost all three singles in a 3-2 loss at Lima Bath Tuesday. Pirate ladies taking wins were Ashlin Gable and Emily Sprague in straight 6-0 sets at No. 1 doubles, while Kristie Geiser and Liz Diller lost only three games in straight set wins at No. 2 doubles.

Pirates dropping two sets each in singles were Shannon Koch at No. 1, Jess Hunter at No. 2 and Rachel Sehlhorst at No. 3. Bluffton was to host Wapakoneta Wednesday afternoon at Harmon Field courts.

University students welcomed with call to action

Several years ago, Christopher Haw decided to heed Mahatma Gandhi's advice and, on Tuesday, he urged Bluffton University students to do likewise.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world," Haw, quoting the Indian leader, told students at Bluffton's opening convocation in Founders Hall. The university welcomed about 270 new first-year and transfer students during the annual ceremony.

Prostate cancer screening held at BVRCC Sept. 16

Blanchard Valley Regional Cancer Center (BVRCC) will conduct a prostate cancer screening Thursday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at BVRCC, 15990 Medical Drive South, Findlay.

All men age 50 and older, or those over 45 years of age with high risk factors for prostate cancer, are welcome to attend.

Risk factors include being African American or having a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65.

This screening is offered by appointment only and is limited to the first 150 men to sign up.

'09-10 Bluffton Schools permanent improvement projects totaled $776,622

It has been a very busy summer for permanent improvement projects in our district. In each summer's district newsletter and in The Bluffton Icon, we outline the revenue that was brought in from this 1/2% permanent improvement income tax and the projects (along with the cost of each project) completed with these tax dollars.

Below is the revenue chart of the combined monies brought in by the tax. Below that is the list of expenditures and projects completed thanks to this fund.

You are correct. August 2010 was hotter and drier than previous Augusts. According to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, here are the weather facts:

August 2010 average maximum daily temperature: 85.1 degrees

August 2010 average minimum daily temperature: 64.9 degrees

August 2010 precipitation: 2.88 inches

Average August 2010 temperature: 75.0 degrees

Normal August average temperature: 70.5 degres

Normal August precipitation: 3.42 inches

August 2010 high temperature: 93 degrees on Aug. 30
