James Harder: "The experience of the 2007 baseball team became a collective journey for this campus community"

On the 10th anniversary of the Bluffton University baseball team’s tragic bus accident, more than 150 people gathered around the Circle of Remembrance as a way to reflect, to remember and to continue to move forward.

By now, I'm sure you have heard from various sources that the White House plans to balance the federal budget by eliminating several agencies, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

As I write, Congress is finalizing a budget for 2017, which includes a significant increase for NEH. However, we do anticipate that the President's budget proposal for 2018 will include proposals to defund these three agencies, among others.

Average daily temp was 11.2 degees above normal

How often will we experience a month with temperatures showing a 62-degree range? Or, a month when the average temperature is 11.2 degrees above the normal average?

We experienced this in February, according to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer.

• February 2017’s low temperature of 11 degrees on Feb. 9, and the high of 73 degrees on Feb. 24, proved it is possible.

• February 2017’s average daily temperature of 39.2 degrees, compared to the normal average February daily temperature of 28.6, also provided it possible.

She won first place in printmaking at Kewpee art show

Georgia Owen, Bluffton High School junior, is the Icon's BHS art student of the month. She has taken Art 1 and Design 1 class.

"I enjoy art because it feels good working on a project so long and when it is finished there is a sense of accomplishment," she said. "It is fun to be able to express my ability in doing what I like."

Following high school she hopes to study to become a pediatric surgeon.

Several hundred Bluffton University students, faculty, staff and community residents  gathered  March 2 for a memorial service at the Circle of Remembrance to recognize the 10th anniversary of the 2007 baseball team’s bus accident in Atlanta, Ga., when the team’s charter bus fell from an overpass on their way to spring training. Here are some photos of the service.

The Village of Bluffton will hold a special council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, for the purpose of contracts, according to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

The meeting is in the town hall.
