A call for King-like courage, nonviolence

Martin Luther King Jr. publicly opposed the Vietnam War for the first time in 1967, straining his relationships with other civil rights leaders and President Lyndon Johnson.

And today, “we, too, must break our silence” when witnessing violence—whether physical or other unjust treatment—being perpetrated against others, a nonviolence activist said in Bluffton University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Forum on Jan. 20.

And the winner is...PEANUT PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY!

Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn Co., invited customers to participated in an employee popcorn cook-off held Saturday.

According to Shirley's website the team of Amber and Sean created the winning flavor.

Shirley's is still working on the details, but expect to see Peanut Peanut Butter & Jelly available in the store as a flavor of month soon.

Members of the Bluffton University Gospel Choir sing Jan. 19 at the 20th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast at the Lima Civic Center. The event is sponsored by the Sigma Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Paul E. Risner, 76, died at 8:33 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, in an auto accident.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1938, in Lima, Ohio to Elmer R. and Ellen Elizabeth (Gilroy) Risner and they preceded him in death. On May 19, 1956, he married Carolyn J. Gullett and she survives in Bluffton.

Mr. Risner retired from Rockwell where he worked as a machinist. He attended Grace Gospel Church of Ada.

Ada fire and EMS were on the scene of an apparent two-vehicle accident on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred at the intersection of State Route 235 and the Lincoln Highway. Traffic was blocked on both highways while cleanup was underway. The Hancock County Sheriff's Department was on the scene. The accident took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. No other details are available. Click for a video.

The Bluffton Lions Club is offering two $500 scholarships to 2015 graduating seniors in local schools. The scholarships will be paid directly to the school or college where the winningstudents will be enrolled.

Applications for these scholarships may be obtained through the guidance counselors in Bluffton, Pandora-Gilboa or Cory-Rawson school districts. Applications received by April 15, 2015 will be considered.
