A duck very rare to Ohio was spotted at the Buckeye on Oct. 26 and has apparently remained near the quarry this week. The bird is a Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, according to Linda Houshower, who has been watching the bird.
This duck has only been seen in the state four or five times. It lives in Texas, Florida and Louisiana.
Linda says that it's very cooperative and fun to see with its bright red bill, it can't be missed. Birdwatchers from across Ohio are coming to see it.

Greetings from Cairns and Cape Tribulation - located on the tropical northeastern coast of Australia. As we got off the plane that brought us north from Sydney to Cairns, we immediately felt the rise in humidity as well as temperature. We were happy to stay in the shade of the tall palms, eucalyptus and myriad other trees that cover this part of the country.
Bluffton's next American Red Cross blood drive will take place in December.
The drive is from noon to 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, at First Mennonite Church, 101 S. Jackson St.
While walk-in donors are welcome, donors are encouraged to make appointments. To make an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS or go to www.redcrossblood.org.
