The Bluffton Beavers traveled to the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University for the second straight weekend to compete in the All-Ohio Championship on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Twenty three Division III teams from across the state provided a high level of competition. The unseasonably warm conditions contributed to one school record, several point scoring positions and some PR performances.
Freshman Anna Hairston (Mansfield/Ontario) dropped an impressive six seconds from her 1500 meter time, breaking the school record in the process, to finish in 4:59.52. Top place finishers for the team were junior Jeff Parker (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) in the javelin who finished 5th with a toss of 170'8". Freshman Trey Everett (Sidney/Fairlawn), fighting a minor ailment, cleared the bar at 6'4" in the high jump, good for 5th place as well. In the men's shot put, Jacob Moran (Carey) is finding his form again, making the final where he placed 8th with a toss of 46'1.5". Freshman Terrill Webb (Kenton) equaled her pole vault school-record clearance of 10'8".
Turning in personal-best performances were sophomore Alex Parker (Alger/Upper Scioto Valley) and freshman Kim Meyer (Defiance) both in the hammer throw, as well as freshman Joel Jacobson (Franklin/Carlisle) in the 200. Sophomore Tara Murphy (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) set a new personal best in the steeplechase and freshman Travis Siler (Miamisburg) completed the best performance list with a new PR at the 1500 meters.
Said Head Coach Karen Brandt, "With a team as young as ours, its difficult to have a 'big weekend' every meet. Last week at the Marv Frye Invitational we had a lot of quality performances and followed this weekend by being a little off. This is a resilient group and I'm confident they will bounce back. If hard work and dedication win the day, our expectations are not dimmed for what they can accomplish two weeks from now at the Heartland Conference Championship.
The team will compete Saturday, April 19, at the Kenyon College Spring Invitational. Events start at 10 a.m.
