Weekday Christian Education celebrates 90 years in Bluffton
One of the longest continually operating educational programs in Bluffton celebrates 90 years this summer.
Bluffton Weekday Christian Education launched in Bluffton schools in 1924 and continues today. Since its beginning, 29 persons have taught elementary youth in what is now known as “release time.” Classes take place in First Mennonite Church.
The program celebrated 90 years during a recent Bluffton farmers’ market.
Current board members of Weekday Christian Ed are Mark Yoder, Gary Bishop and Joyce Smith.
Several teachers were part of the celebration earlier in June. They are, back row from left, Terry Hunt, Mary Ina Hooley, Jodi Conley, Janice Basinger and Hannah Slechter.
Front row from left, Wanda Smith, Mary Ann Kooker and Elnore Yost.
Two attachments at the bottom of this story feature a list of all teachers in the program and a photo taken in 1985 at the organization’s 65th anniversary.
