Frederick Bremer was a Bluffton school superintendent

Former Bluffton schools superintendent, Frederick J. Bremer, 89, died at 9 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at Hilty Memorial Nursing Home, Pandora.

Mr. Bremer was born July 1, 1926, in Defiance,  to John and Helen (Schuette) Bremer. They both preceded him in death.

On July 30, 1960, he married E. Marguerite (Jones) Bremer, who preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 1999.

Mr. Bremer retired in 1984 after serving as superintendent of Columbus Grove Local Schools. He had previously served as high school principal at Columbus Grove. After retirement, Fred continued to be involved as Athletic Director at Columbus Grove for several years.

Prior school districts served in his career included Bluffton, Harrod and Sugar Creek (Vaughnsville). Prior to his roles in school administration, Mr. Bremer had taught in the classroom and coached baseball and basketball.

Mr. Bremer was a graduate of Lima Central High School, Wittenberg University, and The Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan during the time of the Korean War. He had served on the Board of Directors for the Putnam County Council on Aging.

He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lima.  Fred had played for local men's teams, including Ohio Steel and the Vaughnsville town team. He had a stint as manager of the Lima American Legion squad. He also played baseball in Japan during his time in the service. Fred had been a three sport athlete at Wittenberg University in Springfield.

He is survived by sons David (Carmen) Bremer of Columbus Grove, and Jonathan (Lori) Bremer of Muskegon, Mich., and six grandchildren, Anna, Jacob (Amanda), Aaron, Kristen, Megan and Jared.

Funeral services were Aug. 20, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2120 Lakewood Ave., Lima, with Rev. Michael A. Phillips officiating. Burial was in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove, Ohio.

Memorial gifts may be designated to: Columbus Grove Schools, Immanuel Lutheran Church, or Putnam County Council on Aging. Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, handled the arrangements.
