BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team fell behind 7-1 in the lidlifter, but the Beavers turned it around in a hurry as the home team swept Rose-Hulman (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) on Alumni Day for a 3-0 week in the Sommer Center. Bluffton secured its sixth 20-win season in the past nine years, improving to 20-7 overall with a spotless 7-0 mark in the Heartland Conference. Rose-Hulman dropped its second HCAC tussle in as many days, falling to 12-16 on the season and 4-3 in the HCAC after road losses to Defiance and Bluffton over the weekend.
The home team was led by senior MACKENZIE MCFARLIN (Ashland) with 11 kills, one of three Beavers to reach double figures. Also helping Bluffton to the crucial HCAC victory were LAUREN WEISGARBER (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) and Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) with 10 kills each. Collectively, the Bluffton hitters put up stellar numbers as the team finished with a .266 hitting percentage for the afternoon.
ERIN WEISGARBER (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) racked up 33 assists, nine kills and 10 digs, leaving her one spike away from a triple double! The defense was led by junior libero SYDNEY MOHLER (Lima/Central Catholic) who racked up a match-high 24 digs. BECCA TOURNEY (Columbia City) and Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) chipped in from the back with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Their 7-0 mark in the Heartland Conference assures Bluffton of a top 2 seed in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament which is slated for November 2-6. With that comes a bye through the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 2, so the Beavers will open in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 5. The tournament will be staged at the home site of the #1 seed which will either be Hanover or here in the Sommer Center!
The Beavers will be back at home on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to face Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Come out and support your Beavers!
