University Jazz Ensemble, Gospel Choir performs Nov. 12
Bluffton University will host a concert featuring its Jazz Ensemble and Gospel Choir at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in Yoder Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public; an offering will be taken during intermission for music scholarships.
The Jazz Ensemble will perform a number of jazz standards as well as a new work by Bluffton’s adjunct music professor, Paul Baransy. Vocalist Justina Fuqua, a junior music minor from Ada, Ohio, will perform Michael Buble’s “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet.” Several members of the ensemble will also be featured throughout the concert, and the theme from “Star Trek” will round out the program in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
The Gospel Choir will perform a program themed “Hymns: The Remix.” The songs selected are based on hymns from various church traditions that have been remixed to be more of a contemporary gospel or spiritual piece. Some of the common hymns used will be “I’ve got a Robe” and “Abide with Me.” The group will be accompanied by Columbus-based professional musicians Terry Davis, keys; James Vines, base and Wesley Sellers, drums.
