Hanover sweeps softball with pair of shutouts
April 8, 2017
HANOVER, Ind. - The Bluffton University softball team left its offense in Ohio when it traveled to Hanover College for a Heartland Conference doubleheader with the Panthers on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Bluffton fell to 15-8 and 1-4 in the Heartland Conference, while Hanover upped its mark to 12-6 and 2-0 in the HCAC.
Hanover used a leadoff walk and a Bluffton error to plate an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning and Panther hurler Sydney Griffin made it stand up as the Beavers managed just three paltry hits in the opener.
Kelsey Reeder (Galion/Northmor) notched two safeties and Jessie Madzia (Massillon/Tuslaw) picked up the other hit for the Beavers.
Senior Emily Scupholm (Cuyahoga Falls/Our Lady of the Elms) allowed just the one unearned run, but fell to 8-3 on the season following the shutout. She gave up only three hits and struck out two Panthers with two walks.
The second game looked eerily similar to the first as Bluffton finished with just four hits while the home team crossed the dish in the first and third frames for a 2-0 shutout in the series finale.
Reeder again provided the bulk of Bluffton's offense with two hits, giving her four for the day. Jessie Madzia was efficient, needing just 84 pitches to complete the game. She allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Bluffton will return to action when the Beavers travel back to Indiana for a Heartland Conference doubleheader at always-tough Anderson University on Wednesday, April 12. The first pitch is slated for 3;30 PM.
